MIXED BAG FOR JETS' CUP FINALS

On the weekend the Modbury Jets were represented by two teams in the Final of their respective Cup competitions at Hindmarsh Stadium. The club wishes to congratulate both the Under 15 and Under 19 teams on their achievements.

CONGRATULATIONS to Modbury Under 15s team for being back-to-back champions in the Junior Premier League Cup Final at Hindmarsh Stadium. The team played against local rivals Para Hills for the second year running and beat them 2–1. A great effort by the boys and very well deserved for a strong year of very competitive football. Congratulations to the coaches and players from all at Modbury Jets!

COMMISERATIONS to the Modbury Under 19s who put up a great fight in the Cup Final at Hindmarsh on the same weekend. Unfortunately our boys could not bring the cup home this year, but a fantastic effort in getting to the finals and representing the Jets!  Well done to all the players and coaches of the Under 19s, a great effort that you should be very proud of!

Monday July 13, 2009

Saturday was one of those days in sport known as a day best forgotten and that was certainly the case for Modbury Jets as they faced a ruthless Campbelltown City team determined to take top spot of the ladder. No the score above is not a misprint so it's fair to say the next match can't come soon enough.

Some people had predicted Modbury to trouble Campbelltown in this match following the courage and fighting spirit that had been shown in recent week and their good record at Newton it seemed a reasonable predictable, but the tempo of the match was set right from the start and at the 3rd minute Campbelltown were 2 - 0 up and the crowd was in a state of shock. The Jets were just trying to maintain some possession but were often their own worst enemy giving the ball back to the Campbelltown team who had no hesitation is using it well to their advantage. It didn't get any better for the Jets as the game went on and by half an hour into the game and Campbelltown had Modbury found a goal giving not much more than consolation and just to add to the damage just before half time Campbelltown made it five in the half with surely an unstoppable lead of 5 - 1 at half time.

The second half saw Modbury open up with a ray of light as they scored the first goal dragging the score back to 5-2 but after that things turned downhill again for Modbury as Scott Weidenbach was sent off with his second yellow making am already tough task even harder. As the half went on things went from bad to worse for the Jets as the goals just kept flowing through and the final whistle going was the biggest highlight of the day with a demoralising 9 - 2 result

Match Report Coming Shortly

Tuesday June 23, 2009

Last night saw the Modbury Jets face a severe reality check at Oakden as they came across a determined and fired up Adelaide City team looking for their second home victory to consolidate their Top 5 position and remain right in the fight for a Top 3 finish.

Modbury started the match in reasonably good style and it wasn't until about 20 minutes where a couple of mistakes turned the momentum around and with player coach Damian Mori hot on the mark for any loose balls falling City's way it wasn't a shock when Mori capitalised and put the home team in front. A short time later Jets' keeper Paul Reilly made back to back brilliant saves only for the ball to fall loose and a near frozen defence saw Mori casually cruise by and make it 2 - 0 just before half time with a huge second half ahead for the Jets.

The first stage of the second half saw a competitive effort from Modbury until some loose defence saw a good cross get knocked in to make it 3 - 0 to Adelaide City and no way back for the Jets.

This result topped off a disappointing weekend where the Reserves and Under 19 team were both unable to get victories.

RIP ROBERT "BOBBY" DALE

The Modbury Jets regrets to advise of the passing away of Robert "Bobby" Dale on Friday night. Bobby was well known, respected and regarded at Jet Park and he had been regularly involved with Modbury Jets over the last decade with coaching, assisting and Team Manager. Bobby was also a great friend to many people at the club and was always known for his humor and enjoying a drink with his mates.

From everyone at the club Our condolences and deepest sympathies are extended to the Dale family.

Sunday June 14, 2009

Friday night saw one of the biggest nights at Jet Park for some time with both on field and off field events going on to keep everyone entertained. Before the match there was a Junior coaching clinic held by the 'Great' Ian Rush which was well attended and then came the big Round 12 Super League match with Modbury Jets hosting Western Strikers which was a huge match because a Modbury win would see the bottom three teams tighten right up but a Strikers win would see them move away and practically spell the end of Woodbury's Super League campaign.

There's no doubt Modbury coach Neil Henderson had the team fired up for the occasion as the Jets came out looking the better team early on until a defensive lapse saw a free Strikers shot on goal which went just wide. A few moments later Modbury themselves had an excellent opportunity with a good ball through to Russell Clayton who was on the break and got around the Strikers goal keeper who had come out of his area, but his found no Jets players forward enough and the Strikers cleared the ball to safety. Modbury continued to look the better team and found a great chance at the 29th minute when Anthony Solagna put a good ball through to Clayton who was again on the break but his shot was wide for a corner kick. A few minutes later the Jets had another corner kick which appeared to drift harmlessly past goal until the ball got to Matt Kelly and he drilled it beautifully into the top of the net giving Modbury the lead at 37 minutes. Western Strikers had not looked overly dangerous in the game but an over hit back pass saw confusion between the defence and goal keeper allowing a Strikers' tap in goal at 40 minutes. It seemed that yet another sporting twist of fate had struck the Jets as the half time score stayed at 1-1.

The second half saw Modbury come out knowing that the next 45 minutes could decide their season and super League fate and after an even start to the half the Strikers had a couple of opportunities and the third chance saw a decent run down the wing before a good cross saw the ball slotted in to give the Strikers a shock lead against the run of play at 56 minutes. The whole feel around Jet Park changed but a quick attack forward saw a good ball through to Russell Clayton who this time made no mistake equalising for the Jets at 58 minutes lifting the home supporters. From here Modbury again took control of the game looked much sharper and this stayed the same for the next 20 minutes leaving ten minutes for Modbury to not concede and try to find the winning goal. The game got to within the last ten minutes where Modbury had better use of the ball and a good break forward saw a good pass through to Rhys Devlin and he was able to find the net giving Modbury a critical 3-2 lead at 85 minutes. From here the pressure did not stop from Modbury and they gave Strikers no real opportunity for space on the ball and this was important with the stoppage time sure to be close to five minutes because of a couple of injuries. This didn't seem to phase the young Jets who appeared to be enjoying playing out the game in a winning position in front of a big and vocal home crowd, but there was one party trick left for this grand occasion and Damian Morrell wasn't content with the win and tried his luck from just outside the penalty area at 94 minutes and made no mistake giving Modbury a crucial 4-2 victory and more accurately reflecting the game on the scoreboard.

This was such an important victory for Modbury in order to breathe life back into their survival campaign for Super League and to reward the players' recent hard work and of course the vocal supporters at Jet Park.

The great feeling at Jet Park flowed onto Saturday where the Under 19 team had a 2-0 victory and the Reserves held strong for a 4-3 victory making it three out of three for the Jets.

Sunday May 31, 2009

Last night was a critical Round 11 northern derby between Para Hills Knights and Modbury Jets on a cool night under lights at The Paddocks and as has happened so often before the game was full of excitement, action but unfortunately controversy as well.

The match was very important for Para to keep within striking range of the Top 5 and keep well clear from the relegation danger area, but for Modbury still anchored at the bottom the plan was simple. To win and get points on the board.

The game opened brightly with both teams looking keen and sharp to get on top early, but it was the visiting Jets who had the early play looking solid in the middle and continuing the good form from last week, but not being able to find the net. A foul outside the penalty area gave the Jets a chance and at 20 minutes nearly everyone in the ground thought Rhys Devlin had scored from the free kick which hit the bar, but was somehow cleared by the Para defence with what seemed every element of luck going against the bottom placed Jets. Moments later an error in the middle of the ground saw a long Para ball over the top looking for Mark Melady up front who was against Jets' defender Adam Carter, but when Carter slipped Melady kept control and managed to get around and coolly slip the ball in the net giving Para Hills the unlikely lead with yet another cruel blow to the Jets who were stunned by this at the 23rd minute. The Jets didn't lay down and take this as the game was evenly balanced before a couple of good Jets moves forwards kept Para on their toes. A Rhys Devlin sharp shot from a cross drew an excellent save from the Knights keeper but a few minutes later a good ball to Chris Dean saw him slip a pass to Russell Clayton and he drilled the ball into the net making it 1 - 1 at 30 minutes and game on. It was a tough contest for the remainder of the half and the score remained at 1 - 1 for half time giving Modbury some real belief that victory was possible.

The second half saw Modbury come out refreshed and determined to win after no doubt being pumped up again b coach Neil Henderson and the half time speech seemed to work as the Jets were looking the goods and a second goal appeared very possible until the 70th minute where a game changing moment occurred. After Paul Reilly took the kick out for Modbury the Jets were starting to move forward when the game was stopped and called back as the referee assistant had controversially called that Reilly had kicked out over the line of the penalty area. This gave Para a dream position for the free kick to be taken and none other than Nathan Day stepped up and didn't fail the home team scoring from the kick which totally stopped the Modbury momentum leaving leaving players and spectators in disbelief at what had just taken place. The match continued as a struggle and at the 81st minute another moment of controversy came when Day was given a yellow card, but must have said something that the referee wasn't impressed by and was sent off leaving the last minutes of the match as a struggle which Para managed to hold on and get a fortunate win and Modbury were left shattered in another case of what could have been.

It was disappointing that the last 20 minutes of what had been a real tough, but great spirited derby was made to be less than spectacular for spectators and players of both teams, but as the saying goes when you are down everything falls on top of you and this certainly seems to be the case with Modbury.

For Para Hills it was a hard fought victory and congratulations must go to them as well as their vetran striker Mark Melady who played his 250th game. We wish him well for the rest of the season and his career.

Earlier in the evening the Under 19 game saw Para Hills get a 1 - 0 result and the Reserves was a 4 - 0 result in favor of Para.

Match Report from this match to be put up here soon

Sunday May 17, 2009

Friday night saw a comprehensive display from a quality MetroStars team with a 4 - 0 result over a young Modbury team. The first stages of the first half saw Modbury hold their own and they weren't playing a bad style until a few errors across the middle of the park saw the ball being turned over too easily and too often and eventually the Jets were made to pay as MetroStars not only took the lead but then took control of the game and with a second goal just before half time there was an even steeper hill to climb for the Jets down 0 - 2 at half time.

The second half saw Metro quickly continue to control the game and although not yet scoring again signs were ominous when the ball kept turning over but following a couple of substitutions to freshen up the already pacey Metro team they found another two goals leaving the damage at 4 - 0 as the final score.

Sunday May 10, 2009

Yesterday brought Round 2 of the FFSA Top Corner Sports Cup to Frank Mitchell Park where former Super League club in White City Woodville took on the Modbury Jets. It was a depleted Jets team that went into this match with three key players missing from the team. It was an opening 20 minute blitz from White City which decided this match as they took a 2 - 0 lead within 20 minutes. From there the Jets worked back into the match but remaining two goals down at half time.

The second half saw a more sharper Jets team come out and they did everything but score the missing goal until the 88th minute where a penalty was awarded and well taken by Rhys Devlin and from it was all Jets attacking and White City hanging on and the second goal couldn't be found so that left the final score at 2 - 1.

Sunday May 3, 2009

Round 8 was at the end of what had been a long intensive week for the Modbury Jets both on and off the field with a change of coach and some players returning from injury for the longest trip of the Super League season to Camden Park to face an Adelaide Galaxy team who had recently found some form. As expected it was a tough contest but nobody could have predicted the way this match finished up.

It was Galaxy that started out looking sharper and they set the early tempo with a chance from Osama Malik hitting the crossbar before being cleared away from the Jets defence but it was only a temporary relief as Galaxy came forward again and at the 8th minute it was Christophersen who found the space and put away the first goal for Galaxy and gave the Jets some thinking to do. The Jets defence seemed unsettled and were giving Galaxy too much free space but they had managed to close down the forwards for Galaxy forcing shots to go wide but still the home side looked as though they were going to score any time soon. To the Jets' credit they fought hard and held on to stay at a goal down at half time.

The second half needed Modbury to settle and play a more controlled style of game and the half almost started in disaster when a pass was intercepted by Malik and the Galaxy were on the break but Paul Reilly yet again stood strong in the Modbury goal preventing further damage on the board. Brad McKay was brought on and his first touch was a header just high of goal at 57 minutes. Another great save from Reilly at 70 minutes kept the Galaxy out and his quick release of the ball up forward found Russell Clayton who found Chris Dean and his shot was deflected out. A great Rhys Devlin ball forward found Dean again and he got a neat ball over to captain Matt Kelly and he made some space and scored the equalising goal at 73 minutes giving Modbury some real life. The Jets had played the second half with a better more attacking style and once on equal terms they were going for that first win. A great run and ball through to Anthony Solagna saw a golden chance to get that goal but his shot went painfully close but wide and a late shot going high from Chris Dean left everything looking like it would be a draw which didn't really help either team. In the dying minutes of stoppage time a last gasp Jets forward move found Solagna but the Galaxy goal keeper Veitch stopped the ball or so it seemed, but a fumble saw the ball come loose and go into the net giving Modbury the winning goal. Moments later the final whistle went giving Jets fans that win that was so desperately wanted and deserved by the players who worked hard out on the field.

It was a confidence boosting win to hopefully lift the boys and get them off the bottom of the Super League with some more victories. Well done to Neil, Bud and the lads...keep it going!!

Earlier in the day the Under 19 team suffered a 4 - 1 loss followed by the Reserves slipping up with a 2 - 0 loss.

This week Modbury will travel to White City Woodville for the Round 2 Cup Fixture.

Sunday April 26, 2009

Yesterday was the ANZAC Round of matches in the FFSA Super League and it was memorable for all the wrong reasons for Modbury as a 5 - 0 defeat against Raiders was the outcome.

ANZAC Day 2009 certainly turned on the weather as the Croation Sports Centre at Gepps Cross was surrounded by rain, cold winds and low dark sky and with kick off an hour later than usual it made sure the match in fact the second half would finish with the lights on due to the extreme darkness. The first half saw Modbury open up in a competitive manner even creating some play and actually hitting the cross bar twice but no goals coming from it. In what has become a dangerous regular occurrence the Jets' concentration lapsed just before half time leaving Mimi Saric on the back post to open the scoring for Raiders. This saw a half time score of 1 - 0 to the home team but Modbury still right in the hunt.

The second half can simply described as a capitulation where a spell of about 20 minutes saw the Jets go from being in the contest to falling to pieces five goals down and once again it was Paul Reilly in goals for Modbury who prevented an even worse score. All in all the 5 - 0 result was a match Jets' fans and players can't forget soon enough and some serious work will be needed to turn things around in this week's upcoming match at Camden against Adelaide Galaxy.

Wednesday April 15, 2009

The FFSA Cup always provides for an exciting set of matches where anyone could meet and anything could happen. The Easter Round of matches proved to be no exception with some interesting results across the state.

At The Paddocks Para Hills Knights were made to work hard for their 2 - 1 victory over SASI while Seaford avenged their season defeat two days earlier against West Adelaide as the teams returned to City Mazda Stadium at Richmond where this time Seaford were victorious with a 3 - 2 score. At Woodside the Adelaide Hills Hawks defeted Playford City 3 - 1 and it was the same score at Jet Park where Modbury caused quite a shock by defeating Raiders. For the second time in the long weekend Blue Eagles managed to get a second half goal to overcome Western Strikers 1 - 0 this time at Marden, but at Polonia Reserve Croydon had no such trouble with a 3 - 0 win over Gawler SC. South Adelaide Panthers pushed the Port Adelaide Pirates all the way at O'Sullivan Beach but the Pirates came away with the 2 - 1 win, while at Bailey Reserve Cumberland United had a comfortable 5 - 2 win against State League's newest team The Cove and at Athelstone Reserve NAB defeated Port Pirie 3 - 1. At Camden Sports Park it was an absolute debarcle as Adelaide Galaxy easily accounted for Western District Toros 11 - 0 and it wasn't much different at T K Shutter Reserve where MetroStars cruised past Scotch College 7 - 0. In an all Premier League clash White City Woodville accounted for the Adelaide Comets 2 - 0 at Frank Mitchell Park while in another all State League clash Noarlunga United went down 1 - 3 at home to Enfield City. Campbelltown City had to battle hard to get over Adelaide Olympic 2 - 1 at John Hart Reserve, but it wasn't as difficult for their Eastern rivals Adelaide City who defeated Adelaide Cobras 6 - 2 at Weigall Oval.

Wednesday April 15, 2009

After not yet gaining a victory in the Super League season the Modbury Jets pulled off a real Easter trick on Easter Monday with a 3 - 1 victory over their more fancied Super League opposition in the Raiders with former Modbury reserves coach John Duthie at the helm in their cup match at Jet Park.

Modbury had not got off to good starts in some games this year and this was something that did happen with the Jets' creating the first real chance in the game when the ball was worked forward and a good cross ball found Scott Lindsay and he put it away giving Modbury the lead at the 4th minute. This seemed to fire the Raiders up as they were quickly involved in the match with the midfield for them taking control and a good Raiders cross somehow wasn't connected properly in the penalty area and the Jets were able to clear it away. A long shot from outside the penalty area drew Jets' goal keeper Paul Reilly into a great save to maintain the lead. Modbury had another great chance at 25 minutes in with Anthony Solagna putting a neat ball through to Luke Mettyear but his shot was quickly blocked by the Raiders' goal keeper ensuring no further damage was done. South Australian legend Ritchie Alagich was seeing plenty of the ball for Raiders and at the 33rd minute he made a good run and his shot on goal was accurate and gave Raiders the equalising goal. From here Modbury's players could not afford to drop their heads before half time and when a free Raiders break was made down the wing before the shot from the cross going high over goal there were concerns from Modbury that the heads had dropped but at 41 minutes Chris Dean played a great ball through to Rhys Devlin and he coolly slotted the ball into the net giving the lead back to the home team. The half time score stayed at 2 - 1.

The second half had Jets' fans hoping a success was only 45 minutes away but Raiders would not make life easy and an early lapse leaving another free Raiders break with a shot on goal that was wide. The match stayed in even balance for a while until a Jets forward move saw Chris Dean flick the header over to Luke Mettyear and he found the net making it 3 -1 and Modbury were surely on their was to the second round of the cup. From here Raiders started to look like a team that was beaten and despite Alagich still all over the place they couldn't generate enough play up forward to threaten the Jets. A late free kick which Alagich put wide at 82 minutes was a sign that Modbury were not going to loose this match and they did not with the final score 3 - 1.

It was very pleasing for Modbury to get this win against Super League opposition who had a quality defence including Todd McSorely and Scott Morrison and midfielders such as Mimi Saric and of course Ritchie Alagic.

Unfortunately the Modbury Reserves team lost 0 - 3 but the Under 19 team had a great 4 - 1 win.

Sunday April 12, 2009

The Easter weekend of matches provided a spread from Easter Thursday night through to Saturday night and with Cup action on Easter Monday there was obviously no Sunday action but still the action was flowing freely across the state.

Devine Homes Super League: Super League kicked off as last year's top two teams in Adelaide City and MetroStars met at Oakden and it was a 1 - 1 result that was battled out.

After the Good Friday break the action was back on Easter Saturday with the Modbury Jets travelling to Woodside for the first time to meet with the Adelaide Hills Hawks in what was a crucial match and the honors were shared with a 1 - 1 result there giving Modbury their first point and at The Paddocks it was another draw this time 0 - 0 between the Para Hills Knights and the bottom placed Adelaide Galaxy who also got their first point while up at Newton Village Sports Centre it was another 1 - 1 draw this time between between Campbelltown City and Raiders.

Saturday night brought the only non draw for the Super League Round 5 as Blue Eagles just got past the Western Strikers with a 1 - 0 score at Carnegie Reserve.

Devine Homes Premier League: Round 5 action in the Premier League saw Cumberland United continue their winning ways and staying on top of the ladder as they defeated Adelaide Olympic 2 - 1 at Bailey Reserve, while at John Hart Reserve Port Adelaide Pirates continued Salisbury United's season from hell with a 5 - 1 victory and the Adelaide Cobras made a successful journey down to O'Sullivan Beach with a 4 - 2 victory to continue the South Adelaide Panthers average start to the season.

Saturday night action saw a western derby as Croydon Kings travelled to Frank Mitchell Park to take on White City Woodville and it was the home team who moved into second position on the ladder with a 1 - 0 victory.

Devine Homes State League: State League action was all on Easter Saturday and N.A.B. convincingly defeated The Cove at Athelstone Recreational Reserve with a 4 - 0 score while at City Mazda Stadium, Richmond West Adelaide stopped Seaford's great start to the season with a 5 - 2 victory and down at Wilfred Taylor Reserve Noarlunga United were finally able to post their first victory of the season with a 2 - 1 victory over Northern Demons. At Ramsay Park Port Pirie City made one of their shorter journeys but there was no joy coming with it as Playford City got a 3 - 1 victory over them.

The Saturday night match may well have been titled the Rushworth Easter Massacre with Enfield City having the night of their lives against Gawler SC and the score was an amazing 10 - 0 result.

Sunday April 12, 2009

Yesterday was the Modbury Jets first match against the Adelaide Hills that had been played at the Adelaide Hills new home base at Woodside and on a wonderful sunny Easter Saturday the result left both teams feeling a bit empty for Easter with a 1 - 1 draw the result.

There was no question that this Easter meeting in the Hills was a crucial match for both clubs with the Hawks looking to move another game away from the bottom two and Modbury aiming to climb to within a point of the Hills.

The match opened with the Hills looking sharper and Modbury making simple errors early which didn't help the cause and it was the Hills' Charlie Bowman who made the first real opportunity when he broke through and was almost in position to shoot before the last Jets' defender was able to block him and get the ball away. Soon afterwards there was more opportunity for the Hawks as a midfield error from Modbury saw the ball put just outside the area for the Hills' forward Santangelo who fortunately for Modbury shot wide, but he wasn't finished as a few minutes later his first shot was well saved by Modbury goal keeper Paul Reilly and the second follow on shot was again brilliantly saved by Reilly. As the half went on Modbury coach Jason Hayhurst would have been seeing red as the amount of errors from the Modbury midfield and easy turnovers was tearing his team apart and the next Hills' player given a chance was their captain Nathan Elliott who mishit again fortunately for the Jets. Finally a neat passage of play from Modbury saw a nice run from Scott Lindsay and then a good ball found Rhys Devlin in a one on one with the Hills' goal keeper but the shot was well wide and caused no harm for the home team. History seemed to repeat itself for Modbury as the half time break was looming a lack in concentration saw Bowden recieve a good ball from the Hawks' midfield and this time found his placement and put away the goal giving Steve Maxwell and his team a crucial lead going into half time at 1 - 0.

The second half saw the Jets come out and another near miss from the Hills' Santangelo had their supports very concerned but fortunately they settled down and worked their way into the match more and a great ball through found Rhys Devlin and this time he made no mistake finding the net and leveling the match at 1 - 1 at the 64th minute. This lifted Modbury and it was like the team had a new found energy as they were passing, running and using the ball well and looking a decent outfit. This rally was slightly broken at 71 minutes when Charlie Bowden was on the break for the Hills and it took another great save from Paul Reilly to make sure the score stayed level and only a moment later the ball went forward and found Chris Dean who had come off the bench and half of the ground thought his shot was in but it went agonisingly past the post and out. Modbury were putting the pressure on for the last 15 minutes and were working hard but the Hills defence stayed solid and prevented the Jets leaving both teams to ponder on the missed chances as the match finished at 1 - 1.

On the bright side it put the Jets on the board as far as the ladder is concerned and kept them four point behind the Hills.

Earlier in the day the Under 19 match was a 0 - 0 draw and the Modbury Reserves team got a 2 - 1 victory so well done to Bud and the lads.

Easter Monday Cup action will ensure little time for rest as Modbury will be hosting the inform Raiders team at Jet Park with the Under 19 game commencing at 9:30am, Reserves at 12pm and Seniors at 2:30pm.

Wednesday April 8, 2009

Round 4 matches across all leagues and all grounds brought lots of goals, action and excitement once again and the games were spread from Friday night through to Sunday afternoon.

Devine Homes Super League: Super League action kicked off on Friday night at Jet Park where reigning champions Adelaide City took on a young Modbury Jets team and it was unfortunate for Modbury that City had dropped the week before and as a result they bounced back with a 4 - 0 victory.

Saturday action saw Campbelltown City destroy Adelaide Galaxy with a 4 - 0 score at Newton Village Sports Centre while at the Croatian Sports Centre Adelaide Hills Hawks got a hard earned point against the Raiders and at Marden Blue Eagles made the most of being up against a Para Hills Knights team who had two players sent off and got a home 2 - 0 win.

Saturday evening at T K Shutter Reserve saw MetroStars get a home win getting across the line 1 - 0 against Western Strikers.

Devine Homes Premier League: Round 4 for Premier League saw the South Adelaide Panthers get a home point as they drew 1 - 1 with Croydon Kings at O'Sullivan Beach while the Adelaide Cobras were required to play a home match at Carnegie Reserve and it wasn't a happy outcome as Cumberland United defeated them 1 - 0 and John Hart Reserve saw the Port Adelaide Pirates slip up as SASI capitalised with a 3 - 2 victory.

Saturday night at Steve Jarvis Park saw Salisbury United take on White City Woodville and it was not a happy night for the hosts with a 0 - 3 defeat.

Sunday at John Hart Reserve had Adelaide Olympic get a 4 - 2 victory over the Adelaide Comets.

Thursday April 2, 2009

Friday night was an example of why Adelaide City have been the best team in the competition over the last five seasons as they bounced back from a surpising defeat Monday night with a solid win at Jet Park.

Cool conditions greeted the players and officials at Jet Park where the expectations were that Adelaide City would take the points and after a steady first ten minutes from the Jets an Adelaide City move forward saw a long cross which Jets' goal keeper Paul Reilly was unable to get to but worst luck for the Jets it deflected off a defender in for a gift own goal to give City the lead at the 11th minute. From there it was obvious that City meant business with Coach Damian Mori starting from the opening whistle unlike previous weeks and he was looming dangerously among the Jets' backline. Modbury had the closest attempt on goal with a free kick but that was easily saved by City goal keeper Ben Moore. At the 25 minute mark Mori got the right ball and powered his way along the wing before cutting inwards and with a classy finish he made it 2 - 0 to the champions who looked on a serious mission of redemption from their last match. Things got no better for Modbury as Reilly was doing everything possible in goals and keeping the match from becoming a horrible score but it was almost a shooting gallery at him. Just before half time it was Mori on the run again and once again his accuracy and finishing was second to none making it 3 - 0 in his team's favor at 42 minutes. The Jets were able to hold out to half time without conceding any further.

The second half had Modbury supporters hoping there could at least be some sort of contest unlike in the first half, but there was very little to cheer about as City continued to run the show and at the 66th minute Chad Bugeja iced the cake with a fourth goal. Modbury did maintain more possession in the second half but generated very few attacking chances on goal leaving Moore feeling very isolated and probably a bit chilly in the City goal with very little to do. City did take their foot off the pedal but the damage had well and truly been done and the final score finished at 4 - 0 to Adelaide City.

The Reserves score was a similar story with a 5 - 0 victory to Adelaide City, but Modbury Jets' Under 19 team held the blue and white flag up with their first victory winning 2 - 1 so well done to Bud and the lads!

This Easter weekend will see Modbury travel to new ground as they take on the newly promoted Adelaide Hills Hawks at the Hawks' Nest, Woodside in what will be a critical match where the Jets must get their first win to ensure that they don't lose touch with the rest of the pack.

MODBURY JETS WOMENS' TEAM

Sunday saw the opening match for the Modbury Jets Womens' Team in the SA Womens' Soccer Association (SAWSA) Division 4 and it was a great start for the girls with a convincing 6 - 0 defeat of Gawler SC. The Womens' Team fixtures can be found under the Fixtures & Results page and more information will be available on the team shortly.

We wish coach Noah Albanese all the very best along with all the girls for the 2009 season.

Once again there was plenty of action across the state in Round 3 matches which was generally played in warm conditions although back to normal kick off times.

Devine Homes Super League: Saturday afternoon strangely had only one matchup in Super League with Campbelltown City travelling to Woodside to face the Adelaide Hills and the desperation for Campbelltown to get some points on the board got them through with a 1 - 0 victory still showing the Hills are certainly a competitive team in Super League this year.

Saturday night had a feast of Super League action with the Western Strikers just getting over the line with a 2 - 1 victory denying Modbury their first points of the season and at Camden Sports Park the Blue Eagles also denied Adelaide Galaxy their first points of the season with a 2 - 0 result and at The Paddocks it was a battle between two teams who will be expecting to play in the finals and the result showed very little between them with a 1 - 1 result.

Monday night Football at Oakden saw an big result with the Raiders defeating Adelaide City 2 - 1 and continuing their recent good form against the reigning champions.

Devine Homes Premier League: Premier League matches were mostly in the afternoon and Cumberland United continued their strong start to the season with a commanding 4 - 1 victory over South Adelaide Panthers who look to have a long season ahead of them going by early results while at John Hart Reserve it was a derby of sorts with Port Adelaide Pirates taking on fellow tenants in Adelaide Olympic and it was a 1 - 1 result. Adelaide Comets were required to transfer their match against Adelaide Cobras to Marden Sports Complex due to Santos Stadium being unavailable and it wasn't a happy experience for the Comets with a 0 - 3 loss the result and at Polonia Reserve it was a thriller with Croydon Kings getting their first win for the season with a 4 - 3 victory over the winless Salisbury United.

Saturday night action say White City Woodville return to Frank Mitchell Park and they did so successfully with a 4 - 2 victory over the SA Sports Institute.

Devine Homes State League: State League Round 3 saw N.A.B. play out their second home draw in consecutive weeks this time a 1 - 1 draw with Playford City while at Karingal Reserve Seaford Rangers made it three consecutive wins for the first time in the club's history with a 5 - 2 victory over Gawler SC who were playing in their third consecutive match down south. FFSA newcomers The Cove remained unbeaten battling out a 1 - 1 draw with Western District Toros at Pennington Oval and it was no joy for West Adelaide playing their first home game at City Mazda Stadium at Richmond as Enfield City picked up their first victory of the season with a 1 - 0 score. Up at Savoy Park in Port Pirie the locals were kept happy with Port Pirie defeating Noarlunga United 4 - 1.

Sunday March 29, 2009

Last night was the first ever meeting between Modbury Jets and the Western Strikers in Super League action at Carnegie Reserve and unfortunately for Modbury it was a familiar pattern for this season of showing the potential but unfortunately falling short of points.

It was the Strikers who opened up looking the sharper team and they created the early play and it took a quarter of an hour for the first threatening attempt where a header on goal went just over the bar. Moments later a Strikers attack on the break saw Jets' goal keeper Paul Reilly in a one on one and he was able to make the save. The 18th minute saw a shot saved again by Reilly before a second save was deflected away and fell to Vlassis for the Strikers who put away their first goal. The goal seemed to deflate the Jets further and the turnovers were far too consistent in the middle of the ground but at the 30th minute a Modbury attack saw the Strikers scrambling to defend and the ball was just cleared off the line unfortunately for the Jets. Just before half time a free kick was awarded to Western Strikers and it was in a dangerous area and the danger became reality when Frank Muscara found the net giving the Strikers a 2 - 0 lead at half time.

The second half saw Modbury come out looking determined to turn things around and when they actually kept position they looked capable of producing some good play. A Chris Dean run down the wing led him to crossing into the middle where the Strikers goal keeper misjudged the ball allowing Scott Lindsay to put the ball in the net giving the Jets their first goal at 54 minutes and some hope of getting some sort of result. Dean was forced to come off the field with an injury shortly afterwards as was Scott Lindsay later in the half which didn't help things for the Jets. A positive was that Scott Weidenbach returned coming off the bench from an ankle injury to add some more experience. Modbury had as much if not more possession in the second half but couldn't make more of their time with the ball and as a result of this they were unable to find the equalizing goal in the second half which left the Western Strikers to hang on for the win with the final score at 2 - 1.

Round 2 was thrown into chaos before a ball was kicked with times of majority of matches in all leagues being forced to reschedule kick off times for matches due to the forecast of 34 C for Saturday. Here's a review of how the weekend went across the state.

Devine Homes Super League: Friday night kicked off Round 2 in Super League with a northern derby at Jet Park with both Modbury and Para Hills chasing the first win for the season, but it was the visiting Knights who took the honors with a solid 3 - 1 victory in the John "JJ" Jacob Memorial Match.

Saturday evening had the Raiders hosting Western Strikers at the Croatian Sports Centre and it was the home team who got the victory with a 2 - 1 score. It was the same score at Newton in an eastern derby where 4 time champions Adelaide City came from a goal down to knock off Campbelltown City while up at Woodside the Super League newcomers Adelaide Hills kick started their season with a 2 - 0 victory over Adelaide Galaxy. Saturday night another eastern derby took place at TK Shutter Reserve with a surprise result if MetroStars going down 0 - 1 to Blue Eagles.

Devine Homes Premier League: Saturday evening had had only two Premier League matches take place with Cumberland United putting on a solid display with a 4 - 1 home victory against Croydon Kings at Bailey Reserve and the Adelaide Comets also moved to four points on the ladder with a 2 - 0 victory against South Adelaide Panthers at O'Sullivan Beach. The Salisbury United vs SASI match will be played on Tuesday 31 March at Steve Jarvis Park with an 8pm kick off and the Port Adelaide Pirates vs Adelaide Cobras match was also postponed to be played at John Hart Reserve at a date to be advised.

Sunday afternoon action at John Hart Reserve saw an exciting high scoring match with Adelaide Olympic and White City Woodville playing out a 3 - 3 draw.

Devine Homes State League: State League action saw a full round of matches get through and the newest members of the FFSA The Cove made it two from two with a 3 - 0 victory over Port Pirie City at Hallett Cove, while a bit further down the coast at Karingal Reserve the Seaford Rangers made it also two from two as they defeated the Western District Toros 3 - 1 and over at Wilfred Taylor Reserve Noarlunga United were held to a 2 - 2 draw against Gawler SC who were on their second straight match out of three in a row down south. NAB and Enfield City also played out a draw at Athelstone with the score being 0 - 0 in NAB's opening match and it was Enfield's second straight draw. Up at Byrne Park in Port Pirie the Northern Demons caused somewhat of an upset with a 3 - 1 victory over West Adelaide Blues.

The Modbury Soccer Club would like thank everyone who attended Friday night's match which was held in honor and memory of John "JJ" Jacob being a Modbury home match but everyone's thoughts and respects were also paid to Martyn Crook who was strongly connected to the Para Hills Knights Soccer Club as well as football in South Australia. Regardless of the result it was a wonderful night for everyone and it was greatly appreciated that so many supporters of both clubs stayed back and created a great atmosphere in the club after the match just showing how good the relationship between Modbury and Para Hills is and hopefully will remain and grow.

Thanks to everyone for honoring JJ and Martyn!

Friday night was the opening home match for the Modbury Jets and the occasion didn't come much bigger with a local derby against Para Hills Knights. The match had the added incentive that both clubs were looking for the first win for the 2009 Super League season but it was the visitors who took the opportunity with a 3 - 1 victory.

The match opened in an even manner with neither team threatening and only Para Hills with a couple of chances that didn't really threaten Jets' keeper Paul Reilly. At the 25 minute mark the match had reached no real heights and was looking like it needed some sort of spark and a few minutes later the spark was found when a Jets turnover became costly as the mistimed pass went straight to the Knights' Matthew Muscroft and he broke towards goal before cooly putting the ball in the net giving Para Hills the lead at 30 minutes. A few minutes later it got worse for the Jets with Damir Metljak coming off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Para Hills were looking sharper after the goal but Modbury were able to hold them off to half time leaving the score at 0 - 1.

The second half commenced with Modbury needing to make another change with Dejan Markov substituted with some sort of ankle injury and things didn't get any better onfield with the Knights taking full control but unable to break the defensive line. It looked like the time had come for Para when there was a one on one chance between Barbaro and Reilly but fortunately for the Jets Barbaro put it well wide. Modbury were still tryinh hard and Rhys Devlin created some movement up forward and came very near to scoring the equalizer but was denied by Para keeper James McKee. At 63 minutes the down hill trend for Modbury continued when a Para Hills corner kick led to four successive clearances from the Jets' goal area but the Referee's Assistant flagged and signalled that a goal had been scored much to the shock of both teams and it appeared that there was no way back for the Jets from there. Para continued to control the match and their vetran striker Mark Melady almost had a goal except for hitting the outside of the post at 75 minutes but he was again involved shortly afterwards where his run down the wing saw his initial cross cleared away but only to Joel Allwright who blasted in the ball from outside the penalty area making it 3 - 0 at 81 minutes and the final whistle couldn't come soon enough. To Modbury's credit they kept trying to create play and eventually were rewarded after another Devlin attempt on goal was saved but the ball came back to Mark Clayton who drilled the ball into the net giving Modbury a consolation and probably a deserved goal at 85 minutes. The match pretty much wound up from there leaving the full time score at 1 - 3 in favor of the visiting Knights.

This result will leave Modbury chasing their first point for 2009 and that opportunity will arise Saturday night against the Western Strikers at Royal Park, while Robbie Ditroia's team now has their first win and will be full of confidence when taking on MetroStars also on Saturday night at The Paddocks.

A reminder that the Modbury vs Para Hills Reserves and Under 19 matches will be played at Jet Park on Tuesday night with Under 19 commencing at 6:15pm and Reserves at 8:15pm. Entry is Free.

Tuesday March 17, 2009

The opening round of the season is always a new and exciting time and this week has proved to be the case again with some interesting and surprising results.

Devine Homes Super League: The Super League season opened up with the Modbury Jets travelling to Marden and in although some thought this would be a one sided match it was anything but with the Jets leading twice before Blue Eagles managed to sneak in front winning 3 - 2 and it was the same result at Carnegie Reserve, but also against the predictions with Western Strikers getting the victory over Campbelltown City in the Strikers' first ever Super League match.

Saturday night action saw a rematch of last year's Elimination Final with Para Hills Knights hosting Raiders at The Paddocks and it was again a tight, tough battle with a 1 - 1 result the final score, while down at Camden Sports Park MetroStars kicked off their season in strong manner defeating Adelaide Galaxy 3 - 1.

Modbury night football returned to Oakden with champions Adelaide City playing host to Adelaide Hills in a match where many expected a big score, but the Hills fought right to the end and it took two goals in the last ten minutes to give Adelaide City the 2 - 0 victory.

Devine Homes Premier League: Port Adelaide Pirates kicked off their season defeating South Adelaide Panthers 3 - 0 at John Hart Reserve in one of only two matches where there was a victory. At Bailey Reserve Cumberland United and Adelaide Comets drew 1 - 1 and at Polonia Reserve it was the same outcome between Croydon Kings and SASI, both team who are new to the Premier League after Croydon came back down from Super League and SASI gained promotion from State League.

In the twilight match at Steve Jarvis Park Salisbury United returned to the Premier League but their opening match was less than memorable with a 0 - 5 loss to Adelaide Olympic who were no doubt craving to get on the field and put behind all their off field drama from the off season. Polonia Reserve played host to it's second Premier League match for the day with a clash between White City Woodville and Adelaide Cobras which ended up in another 1 - 1 draw.

Devine Homes State League: West Adelaide Blues opened their State League season travelling to Ramsay Park to face Playford City and started on the right note with a 3 - 1 away victory while down south at Wilfred Taylor Reserve Noarlunga United's return to State League was with a southern derby against Seaford Rangers and it was a horror start for the hosts with Seaford coming away with a 5 - 1 victory to show that they will be more than competitive this season. Up at Port Pirie the Western District Toros made the journey to face Port Pirie City but fell short with the hosts getting a 1 - 0 win.

A twilight match saw the debut of The Cove against one of the newer teams of the FFSA in Gawler SC who made the long trip to Hallett Cove but came away empty handed as the newest team started perfectly with a 2 - 0 win and in the Saturday night match at Rushworth Reserve Enfield City started their campaign to get back to the Premier League against the Northern Demons and it was a 2 - 2 draw as the final outcome.

Sunday March 15, 2009

Yesterday saw the Modbury Jets open their 2009 Super League campaign against old Rivals Blue Eagles at Marden and any thoughts before the match of this being a one sided match turned out to be far from true or accurate.

Many people had already written off Modbury for 2009 so no doubt they were out to make an impact and it didn't take long for this to happen. It was Modbury who made the early play and it was a fast ball from midfield which found its way to the Jets' Scott Weidenbach and he was able to slot the ball past Blue Eagles goal keeper Gino Deluca to give the young Jets the lead after 5 minutes. From here Modbury showed confidence and looked capable of causing some further headaches to the home team and a short time later Chris Dean was on the break for Modbury and his cross unfortunately couldn't find a team mate so Blue Eagles were let off the hook. Blue Eagles also had their chances and it took some solid and focused defence from Modbury to keep them out, but at the 20th minute an initial Blue Eagles shot was brilliantly saved by Paul Reilly only for the ball to fall to Blue Eagles' Fernandez who was able to find the net and level the scores. Things got worse for Modbury with Weidenbach coming off injured following an ordinary tackle so this gave new Jet Scott Lindsey the chance to come on and impress. After absorbing some Blue Eagles pressure most Jets fans would have been happy to get to half time on level terms but the Jets had other ideas and after earning a free kick on the edge of the penalty area Damir Metljak managed to find the ball and slip it into the net giving Modbury the lead at 44 minutes and this remained the score to half time giving Modbury some real confidence.

The second half started reasonably even before an unfortunate hand ball resulted in a Blue Eagles penalty which Parissos scored from although he was required to retake it after a team mate infringed on the area before the kick was taken. Modbury continued to work hard and a great ball over from Lindsay found the head of Adrian Giacomelli and his attempt went painfully close, but wide. The 70th minute saw a bitter turn for Modbury where a Blue Eagles attack saw a long ball through and Fernandez who was ruled to be on side found the net giving Blue Eagles the lead. Modbury seemed unsettled for the next few minutes but managed to keep their heads and not concede further but unfortunately for them couldn't take the chances they had. It seemed Modbury's "Marden curse" had struck again with things looking good with potential, but a few small things going against them and just falling short. The match overall was probably deserving of a draw but that is the twists of the world game!!

Despite the 3 - 2 loss Jets' coach Jason Hayhurst and supporters have got reason to have a positive belief for this season.

The Jets Under 19 team had a tough opening match suffering a 0 - 4 defeat but this can a lesson learnt and the lads will be working hard no doubt to improve from here, but the Modbury Reserves were the shining light with a well deserved 2 - 1 victory so well done to Bud Hilton and the boys. Let's keep it going this week!

This week will be a tough opening home match against local neighbours Para Hills Knights to be played at Jet Park on Friday 20th March with a 7:30pm kick off. Under 19 and Reserves matches will be played also at Jet Park on Saturday 21st May U19 at 11:15am and Reserves at 1pm.

Modbury Jets would love to see all their supporters get along to Jet Park for this massive match and help the Jets boys get through!

2009 MICKY DYE CUP FINALS

Yesterday saw the 2009 Micky Dye Cup conclude as did the Arthur Smallwood Cup and Fran Jacob Cup at in warm conditions at Jet Park.

The Arthur Smallwood Cup saw Modbury Jets face Enfield City and it was Enfield who came away with the spoils getting a 1-0 victory to secure the Arthur Smallwood U19 Cup.

The Fran Jacob Cup featured Modbury Jets hosting the Croydon Kings, but it was anything but a home advantage for the Jets with Croydon coming out and blitzing them with an amazing 6-1 score. Strangely enough the score was only at 2-0 at half time but a second half stampede ensured Croydon won the Fran Jacob Reserves Cup.

The Mick Dye Cup for Senior Level saw Enfield City looking for back to back victories in the final of this competition but they were up against a steep challenge with their opponent being an inform Para Hills Knights team who were looking to go one better from their final loss in 2007 in this competition. The odds were in favor of Para to win this final but nobody told Enfield that as they went out and had a real go at it and managed to find the net just before half time to get a 1-0 lead. As much as Para tried everything Enfield hung on even with a player sent off with about 15 minutes to go and they managed to successfully defend the Micky Dye Cup.

The Modbury Soccer Club would like to congratulate Enfield City on their Senior and Under 19 Cup victories and Croydon on their Reserves victory and would like to again thank all the participating clubs - Playford City, Salisbury United, Enfield City, Croydon Kings and Para Hills Knights for making these cups possible and we hope to run the competitions again next year!
